Designing a substantial family home on this unusually small corner site required a thoughtful and bespoke approach. The challenge was to create a space that met the client’s need for space by overcoming the size limitation. Given the north-facing orientation of the front, we wanted to maximise natural light, particularly during the colder winter months, without sacrificing privacy.
We explored several options, and ultimately, we felt it was crucial to design a home that would embrace the northern sun while respecting the surrounding context. The client’s desire for a modern aesthetic was realised through striking shapes and high-quality finishes, giving the home both visual interest and a contemporary feel.
Being a builder themselves, the client had a strong understanding of construction, which made collaboration smoother. However, given the constraints of the site, every design decision had to be carefully considered.
The final design is a bright, open home that takes full advantage of its northern orientation, while maintaining a sense of seclusion. It offers the spaciousness and functionality our clients wanted, while also enhancing the streetscape with its modern appeal.
